that 명사절이 있는 수동태

3 형식 능동태 문장을 수동태로 전환하는 경우(3 형식 수동태의 기본 참조)  중에서 가장 난이도가 높은 경우는 능동태의 목적어가 that 명사절인 경우입니다. 이 경우, 우리는 두 가지 방식의 수동태를 만들 수 있습니다.

 

우선, 일반적인 3형식 수동태 전환의 방식을 따라서, 능동태의 목적어였던 that절을 주어로 삼아서 수동태를 만들 수 있습니다. 다만, 영어는 주어가 너무 긴 것을 싫어하기 때문에 that절 대신에 가주어 It을 사용하는 경우가 대부분이지요. 이때, that절은 문장의 끝에 위치하게 됩니다. 

 They said that he was responsible for the accident.
→ It was said that he was responsible for the accident.
     (It: 가주어/ that절: 진주어로 문장 끝에 위치)

 

보통 중등 문법 시험에서 that절 수동태가 나오는 경우에는, 능동태의 주어가 People, They, We 등 생략가능한 주어가 많이 주어지기 때문에 "by + 행위자"를 생략하는 경우가 많습니다, 하지만, 일부 그렇지 않을 경우에는, "by + 행위자"를 문장 제일 끝이 아닌 that절 보다 앞쪽에 위치시켜서 그 "by + 행위자" 가 that절의 일부로 보이는 실수를 막습니다. 

The TV reporter said that the event had been canceled.
→ It was said by the TV reporter that the event had been canceled.
("by the TV reporter"가 문장 끝으로 가게 되면, 그 행사가 기자에 의해서 취소된 것으로 잘못 전달될 수 있음.)

 

that절 수동태를 만드는 두 번째 방법은, that절 안의 주어를 수동태의 주어로 삼는 경우입니다. 이 경우, that절의 문장이 해체되기 때문에, that 접속사는 사라지고, that절 안의 동사가 "to 부정사"가 되어서 "be동사 + p.p + to부정사"의 꼴을 가지게 됩니다.

People believed that the earth was flat.
→ It was believed that the earth was flat. 지구가 평평하다는 것이 믿어졌다. (일반적 수동태)
→ The earth was believed to be flat.   지구는 평평한 것으로 믿어졌다.
    (that절 주어가 수동태 주어로 사용)

 

이 두번째 수동태의 경우 주절의 시제보다 that절의 시제가 더 과거인 경우, 단순 to 부정사 대신 완료 부정사(to have p.p)를 사용하게 됩니다. 기본적으로 완료부정사는 문장의 시점보다 부정사의 동작이 더 이전에 일어났다는 것을 뜻합니다. 

They think that he was very poor when young.
→ He is thought to have been very poor when young.
    (그가 어린 시절 가난했다는 사실이 사람들에 의해 그렇게 여겨지는 현재 시점보다 더 과거임)
